American Resilience: Flexing Under Adversity and Refusing to Break

Dear you, We’d love for you to get to know one of our favorite story categories on the site. It’s called American Resilience and it’s where we celebrate the American values that get us all loud and proud to live in the land of stars and stripes. Like Ellen (DeGeneres, because who else?) once said, “Honesty, equality, kindness, compassion, treating people the way you want to be treated and helping those in need. To me, those are traditional values.” It’s where we acknowledge that while oppression is part of our country’s history it’s never going to define us and we will continue to rise against it in the name of equality and justice. It’s where we show our respect for our nation by challenging stereotypes and broadening our idea of what being American means—like helping our friends beyond our borders because these borders ain’t that old and we all got here by crossing them at some point. It’s where you’ll meet Mormons dedicating their churches to helping refugees, models challenging ideas of gender, beauty, and success, a Black man who sits down for dinner with KKK members just to have humble, honest, down-to-earth chats. This is our patriotism – one that connects the red states with the blue states, and people of all colors, genders, and histories. One that sheds light on ways we can honor the soil we tread while creating a healthy future for all of us, together. Above all else, this is where positive change grows from the unexpected. Love, A few resilient, dogged, and sometimes unexpectedly proud Americans. Here are a few of our favorite stories in American Resilience.
