Former Monk Creates Meditation App ‘Headspace’ to Help Us Slow Down

Andy Puddicombe – Buddhist monk and the founder of the tech startup, Headspace – is a busy guy. He’s been featured in every magazine ever – well, almost – has written two books, and has his own TED Talk. Oh, and a degree in Circus Arts. Really, that’s a thing.

After a string of hard-knocks led him to realize a traditional path to success wasn’t for him, Andy spent the bulk of his 20’s on a decade-long journey around the world. The trip was spurred by a visit to the Himalayas to study meditation. It culminated in his ordination as Buddhist Monk.

Back at home, Andy wanted to share what he saw as the gifts of meditation and mindfulness. He found a home in tech where his idea for Headspace took root and then took off.

“We want to create the most engaging health platform we can,” Puddicombe told Fast Company. “We certainly don’t have all the answers. But we do think we have a role to play in starting to get the public to reframe how they think about health.”

All kinds of people use Headspace – from ages 18 to 75. Mindfulness and meditation are practices that benefit everyone.
