LGBTQ Anti-Discrimination Law Succeeds in Federal Courts

This had discrimination written all over it so she took the issue to court and in April celebrated a victory.

Under the umbrella of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, federal courts have ruled that LGBTQ employees cannot be discriminated against in the workplace due to their sexual orientation or gender. This came as a somewhat surprising triumph – of the 8-3 decision, 5 of the judges were nominated by Republicans.

While the 3 opposers nit-picked the words in the Civil Rights Act – claiming they didn’t apply to the LGBTQ population – Judge Richard Posner, chosen by Ronald Reagan, supported the appeal, saying, “I don’t see why firing a lesbian because she is in the subset of women who are lesbian should be thought any less a form of sex discrimination than firing a woman because she’s a woman.”

Looks like we’ve made some unexpected friends.

This case will probably make its way to the Supreme Court, so let’s speak up and let our representatives know what side of history we’re on.
