The Fashion Revolution Will Not Be Gendered

Designer Shayne Oliver’s simple observation is becoming a fashion revolution.

“Men’s wear is not glamorous. And women’s wear is. Why not mix them together?”

Despite being one of the biggest new names in fashion, Oliver is kind of a loner. He grew up with his mom – a single mother – outside of Minneapolis. Because she had to work a lot, and because being an openly gay 13-year-old can sometimes be isolating, Oliver spent a lot of time thinking, observing and creating with his “air friends”.

Today, Oliver lives in Crown Heights, Brooklyn where he’s best known as the guy behind the decidedly chill, androgynous look that celebrities like Kanye, Rhianna, and A$AP Rocky helped bring to mainstream culture.

Hood by Air, Oliver’s brand, is everywhere now – from high-end boutiques to department stores – and it’s just getting started. That’s the part that has the people who track these things declaring gender-free the future of fashion.
