Tipping Point, Non-Profit Aims to Pioneer the End of Poverty

Tipping Point Community is an SF-based nonprofit that doesn’t mess around when it comes to helping folks in need. They raise funds (mostly from private donors) to help local organizations that are working to eradicate homelessness and poverty.

They help the public sector improve their programs and also invest in startups that are coming up with new and fresh ways to tackle issues of inequality. Through programs in education, employment, housing, and wellness, Tipping Point has helped 23,000 people start their path out of poverty.

Early this year, Tipping Point turned heads when it pledged $100 million to San Francisco, aiming to cut its immense chronic homelessness problem in half within the next 5 years. It’s SF’s biggest private donation ever received.

Tipping Point’s board covers all fundraising and administrative costs, so 100% of all donations go directly to the non-profits and communities they serve.

“Things have to change. It’s no secret what needs to be done. We want to build on the great work that has happened at the city level and expand on innovative solutions,” Daniel Lurie, founder and chief executive officer of Tipping Point, told the SF Chronicle.

“Especially in this time where we cannot necessarily count on what’s going on in Washington, we need local action (…) We need to set an example, and what better city to do that in than San Francisco?”

In an effort to institute comprehensive, permanent reform in San Francisco they’ve hired specialists to study what services homeless people do use to understand what’s working or missing. In an ocean of non-profits, they make sure to work with only the best.

In the SF initiative, they’ll work with both the public and private sectors to create new housing units and improve accessibility to mental health, criminal justice, and child welfare assistance.

In light of the recent North Bay fires, they’re raising money to give relief to low-income communities affected by the tragedy through benefit concerts by bands like Metallica and the Grateful Dead, and through direct donation.
